How to Borrow, Request & Renew

Borrowing Library Items

You can borrow up to 40 physical items at a time.

Items can be returned at any Newcastle Libraries branch. 

Borrowing limits for the eLibrary vary by platform and format. Find more information about the eLibrary here.

Self-check kiosks are available at all libraries, or you can use the self-check function in the Newcastle Libraries app.


Loan Periods

Loan periods depend on the type of item borrowed. 

You can check due dates at any time on your account via the Library App or Catalogue.

Newcastle Libraries is proudly fines free. Charges may apply for items that are lost or damaged. 

  • Books & Audiobooks: 4 weeks
  • Grab & Go books 2 weeks: (no renewals)
  • Magazines and zines: 2 weeks
  • DVDs and Music CDs: 4 weeks
  • Library of Useful Things: 4 weeks
  • Popular items may have shorter loan periods
  • eLibrary: varies by platform and format, 


Renewals and Reminders for physical items

Most items will automatically renew for up to two additional loan periods, unless:

  • Another member has placed a hold on the item
  • It is a Grab & Go or popular item

Return reminders

  • If you receive SMS notifications, you’ll be sent a reminder before items are due
  • If you receive email notifications, you’ll receive both a due-date reminder and confirmation when items are automatically renewed


Renewals and Reminders for eCollection Items

Renewals and reminders for eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines vary by platform.

Notifications are sent to the email address linked to the platform you are using.

How to place a hold on a library item

You can place a hold on items currently on loan to another library member or items located at any Newcastle Libraries, Port Stephens Libraries or Dungog Library location.

To place a hold:

  1. Search for the item using the Newcastle Libraries catalogue or app
  2. Select your preferred format
  3. Click Place hold
  4. Choose your preferred pick-up location.

You will be notified by SMS or email when your item is ready to collect.

You can check your position in the holds queue through your account in the catalogue or app.


Can’t find what you’re looking for?

  • For recent publications, you can submit a purchase suggestion.
  • For older or hard to find titles, we may be able to help through an interlibrary loan.
