Library membership is free for NSW residents who live, work or regularly travel in the Newcastle area. 

As a Newcastle Libraries member, you’ll have access to:

  • Borrow items from the physical library collection
  • Download eBooks, eAudio, and eMagazines
  • Access eResources
  • Use public computers
  • Print, copy, and scan
  • Access our Open+ Library locations (conditions apply)

Join online

If you are over 16 years or older, you can join online and start borrowing today.

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Complete the online membership application
  2. Select how you would like to receive library notifications
  3. Make a note of your new membership number
  4. Download the Newcastle Libraries app and register your membership number

You can also join in person at any staffed library location.

  • Visit one of our libraries
  • Ask a friendly staff member for help
  • Choose a physical library card or register your membership in the Newcastle Libraries app

Conditions of membership

Please note:

  • Items must be returned by their due date
  • You are responsible for all items on your account
  • Parents and guardians are responsible for items borrowed by members under 16
  • Replacement costs may apply for lost, damaged or unreturned items
  • Newcastle Libraries does not charge overdue fees
  • Your membership number should not be shared with or used by anyone else
  • Borrowing and public computer access will be suspended if debts reach $100 or more
  • Lambton Open+ Library entry is restricted to cardholders over 16 years of age. Members under the age of 16 are welcome to access the library in the company of a parent or carer who is a library member
  • Your library card, library app, or membership number, and your pin is required for entry to Wallsend Library after 3pm on weekdays and for access to Lambton Open+ Library 7 days a week
  • Membership privileges and access to Newcastle Libraries locations may be suspended and an exclusion notice issued if Conditions of Use are breached
  • Your personal information is managed in line with the City of Newcastle Privacy Management Plan

Limited membership 

  • Borrow up to 5 items
  • Helps manage returns and financial risk

Temporary membership

  • Available for visitors to the Newcastle area
  • Valid for 3 months
  • Access to eCollections, computers, and print/copy/scan services
  • Borrow up to 5 physical items


Newcastle Toy Library

The Newcastle Toy Library is a not for profit, volunteer run organisation that operates from New Lambton Library on Saturday mornings.  For more information and to join, visit the Newcastle Toy Library website.
