Digital Language and Literacy Tools

We offer digital books, movies, newspapers and learning tools in many languages as well as services to support language learning and tools for people with dyslexia.
To use these services, you’ll need to be a Newcastle Libraries member. Join online now or visit one of our branch Libraries.
Dyslexia-Friendly Books and More
We offer a growing range of dyslexia-friendly reading options for children and adults. These include specially designed print books, eBooks with adjustable fonts such as OpenDyslexic, and eAudiobooks. Many of our eBook apps allow you to change font style, size and background colour to suit your needs. Younger readers can also enjoy StoryBox Hub Read-Along stories, which highlight words as they are read aloud. Explore our dyslexia-friendly children’s books.
Movies
Watch accessible films and stories through Kanopy, with captions and subtitles available for most titles. Younger readers can enjoy StoryBox Hub Read-Along stories, where the text is highlighted as it is spoken aloud.
Newspapers and Magazines
Pressreader makes newspapers and magazines easier to access with options to change font size, adjust contrast and use text-to-speech to listen to articles. Issues can be read in the app or downloaded for offline reading.
Encyclopaedia Britannica Online
Britannica Online supports dyslexic and multilingual readers with flexible font options, text-to-speech, and translation tools. Open any topic and use the toolbar to listen to the text or translate it into another language.
