Red Ship
20: Red Ship, Peter Masters 2020
This image of a big ship moving slowly and gracefully into Newcastle Harbour I’ve always viewed as iconically Newcastle.
When I came back to Newcastle I thought a lot about what is the spirit of the place. What is the spirit that makes Newcastle what it is and without doubt, it’s its waterways. Without doubt its the oceans, the rockpools, the beautiful ocean baths but incredibly the harbour. As a working harbour it’s just a magnificent place. Twenty or thirty big ship movements like this are just majestic. The sheer scale of these behemoths coming in and out, all day every day is really something to enjoy.
I think this is an iconic Newcastle image. To me this is very much what Newcastle is about. A working place, a place of the ocean, a really great place to be.
