Crossbill and Thistle, from the set of 'Small Flowers', one of Hokusai's famed images of flowers and birds.There was a long tradition in Japan of masters excelling in this type of design due to the deep-seated love of living things in the Japanese culture and the veneration in which certain flowers were held through Buddhist and other associations.
